NRCS Issues Call for Cooperative Conservation Partnership Proposals

NRCS seeks to initiate partnership agreements with eligible entities to enhance conservation outcomes in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC, May 5, 2010—Ann English, State Conservationist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in South Carolina, announced a call for proposals from eligible partners for projects to help owners and operators of agricultural and nonindustrial private forest lands improve their natural resources through the Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative (CCPI) in fiscal year 2010. The deadline to submit a proposal is May 27, 2010.

English said, "Partnerships with producers are an effective way to address environmental concerns related to agriculture, and CCPI employs a voluntary approach with landowners and operators to help reduce sediments and nutrients, increase carbon sequestration and build a healthier environment across the country, as well as throughout South Carolina.”

Potential partners include federally recognized tribes, state and local units of government, farmer cooperatives, producer associations, institutions of higher education, and nongovernmental organizations with a history of working cooperatively with agricultural producers. As part of the partnership agreement, approved partners may also help facilitate the submission of producers’ program applications, or they may provide additional technical or financial assistance to participating agricultural producers or provide other resources as defined in the partnership agreement.

Proposals should highlight projects that aim to improve agricultural and nonindustrial private forestlands. The Initiative provides eligible partners with technical assistance through a multi-year agreement. The provided technical assistance will help private landowners not only meet regulatory requirements related to production, but also help them to install and maintain conservation practices and develop innovative conservation practices, including in specialty crops and precision agriculture.
