South Carolina's Current Developments
Home of the first soil conservation district plan...February 4, 1938

June/July 2001 Edition

From the Office of the State Conservationist, Walter W. Douglas

Dear NRCSers:

I am pleased to recognize several NRCS employees who have recently received awards for their dedication and hard work. Debbie Mann, NRCS district conservationist in Georgetown County, received the 2001 NRCS National Civil Rights Individual Award for outstanding outreach efforts. Debbie received this award for her exemplary work on the Sandy Island Drinking Water and Quality of Life Improvement Initiative. She was presented with this honor by Chief Pearlie Reed in a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. NRCS Soil Scientists Bob Eppinette and Ron Morton were also recognized when they received Honorary State Future Farmers of America (FFA) Degrees. Bob and Ron received the highest award presented to supporters of the FFA because of their yearly involvement in the Soils Judging Competitions. Congratulations to these employees who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. I salute your dedication and willingness to go the extra mile.

South Carolina NRCS has also made strides in conservation technology with the development of AFO Wizard—a joint project between NRCS and the University of South Carolina. NRCS District Conservationist Teresa Babb was recently invited to provide a demonstration to Mississippi NRCS employees, at the request of State Conservationist Homer Wilkes. It is this type of leadership and information sharing that has proven South Carolina NRCS as a conservation leader—not only in the state, but nationally as well.

I would like to remind you that Cultural Awareness Day (CAD) 2001 is quickly approaching. On August 28, 2001, NRCS, Rural Development (RD), and our Conservation Partners will converge for a fun-filled day of learning and discovery. The event will be held at Seawell's in Columbia and will be led by professional cultural diversity trainers from the University of California-San Diego. The CAD planning committee has developed a wonderful day and I look forward to seeing you all there.
