SC NRCS and University of SC Publication Win National Design Award

Columbia, SC, April 23, 2008--SC NRCS and the University of South Carolina (USC) were recently recognized for their cooperative efforts to design and publish a book entitled Summary of Natural Resource Concerns in South Carolina. Graphic Design USA presented NRCS with an American Inhouse Design Award, and as a result, the publication will be featured in their Awards Annual, a 300-page edition seen by an estimated 100,000 individuals at advertising agencies, graphic design firms, corporations, publishers and more.

The 123-page USC/NRCS product identifies the state’s priority watersheds in the divisions of soils, water, plant and animal communities, air, energy supply, and working farms, and shadows the topics addressed in NRCS’ Strategic Plan for 2005-2010.

The professionally designed book is enhanced with vibrant photos of South Carolina agricultural scenes, many shot by the author, Dr. Buz Kloot, Earth Sciences and Resources Institute at the University of South Carolina's School of the Environment.  The layout and design was crafted by USC Publications Designer Laurie Barnhill who consulted with SC NRCS Public Affairs Specialist Amy O. Maxwell to develop the look and feel of the book. “Our goal was to take the technical data that Dr. Kloot compiled through his rapid watershed assessments, and assemble it into a user-friendly layout which could be used by many different audiences,” explained Maxwell.

SC NRCS contracted with ESRI-USC through a Technical Service Provider (TSP) agreement to develop rapid watershed assessments for the state. Kloot produced multiple PDF files from his research, but then wanted to make sense of the data in a way that would be practical and accessible for community planners, natural resource professionals, watershed groups, and others who are concerned about water quality. “The book relies on research gathered from the rapid watershed assessments, but goes a step further by helping planners to allocate resources where they are most critical,” said Kloot.
