2006 Conservation
Security Program (CSP)--Lower Pee Dee Watershed
The Lower Pee Dee watershed has been selected in South Carolina for the 2006 Conservation
Security Program. The watershed shares acreage with North Carolina, with
the total acreage included being 1.8 million. In South Carolina, this
watershed includes parts of Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence,
Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro, and Williamsburg Counties, and has a total
acreage of 1.4 million. The sign-up period ends March 31, 2006.
The acreage eligible for CSP 2006 in South Carolina contains an estimated
1,766 farms, including 315,300 of acres of prime farmland.
CSP is a voluntary conservation program and has a unique role among USDA
programs. It identifies and rewards those farmers and ranchers who meet the
highest standards of conservation and environmental management on their
operations. It creates powerful incentives for other producers to meet those
same standards of conservation performance on their operations, and provides
public benefits for generations to come.
2004/2005 CSP
Nationally, about 12,700 CSP contracts were awarded in 2005 with payments to
exceed $1 billion over 10 years. The contracts cover 9 million acres of private
land in 220 watersheds. In 2004, South Carolina was one of 22 states to
participate in the debut of CSP when producers in the Saluda River Watershed
were eligible to apply. There were 20,000 acres enrolled into the program during the
first sign-up. CSP 2005 awarded over 150 contracts covering 100,000 acres of
agricultural land and providing over $1.9 million to producers participating in
the program. South Carolina had four eligible watersheds in 2005, including the
Black, Lynches, Saluda, and South Fork Edisto River watersheds. A program sign
up was conducted in South Carolina from March to May of 2005.
