2006 Conservation Security Program – Lower Pee Dee Watershed

The Lower Pee Dee Watershed straddles the North and South Carolina line in the Northeast corner of South Carolina. The total estimated area in the watershed is 1,805,000 acres.  The watershed area is located in the Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina. This watershed consists of Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro, and Williamsburg Counties in South Carolina, and Anson, Richmond, Scotland and Union Counties in North Carolina.

In the cropland areas of the watershed there are 1,766 farms covering 521,539 acres (excluding CRP acreage). Primary crops include corn, soybeans, cotton, tobacco, wheat, rye (grain), and hybrid Bermuda grass for hay, with a significant number of poultry operations in North Carolina. The central and eastern portions of the watershed encompass a significant portion of the cotton and tobacco production area in South Carolina.
