South Carolina 2008 Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program Information
Accomplishments
Highlighted among South Carolina's WHIP projects are the Beach Vitex Project
with Clemson University's Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest
Science; trout preservation project (Partners for Trout) in the
upstate of South Carolina; a waterfowl project (South Carolina Partners) in the
coastal region; the Newberry County Indian Creek Quail Habitat Initiative; and
the Georgetown County Invasive Species Project. South Carolina NRCS
enrolled 63 individual contracts with landowners across the state in 2007.
Program Benefits
The program helps landowners develop habitat for upland wildlife, threatened and endangered species, fish, and
other wildlife in South Carolina. The bobwhite quail, wintering waterfowl and shorebird habitat,
invasive plant species, and threatened and endangered
plant and animal species have been identified as the “priority conservation concern” in the state.
