FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASECONTACT: Amy O. Maxwell
USDA and USC Produce Wildlife Habitat Conservation Video SeriesJanuary 21, 2011—Columbia, SC—Did you know that over 90 percent of the land in the southeastern United States is privately owned? And it is estimated that 75-80 percent of South Carolina’s land is privately owned as well. Luckily, there is technical and financial assistance available to help private landowners throughout the nation, and here in South Carolina, protect and improve land for the benefit of wildlife. Wildlife Habitat for Good is a new video series filmed in the Palmetto State that illustrates the benefits of wildlife habitat conservation and restoration. The series includes ten chapters with topics including habitat and succession, cropland habitat, old field habitat, wetland habitat, stream restoration, and a bonus chapter about the benefits and precautions associated with prescribed fire. The educational video series is the result of a cooperative agreement between the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Earth Sciences and Resources Institute at the University of South Carolina. NRCS’ mission is to help people help the land and they provide products and services that enable people to be good stewards of the state’s soil, water, and related natural resources on non-Federal lands. They can also assist private landowners in developing a plan to restore habitat for wildlife on uplands, wetlands, and streams. View the entire video series online at www.vimeo.com/channels/wildlifehabitatforgood, or call (803) 765-5402 to request a DVD copy. For more information about conservation on private lands contact your local NRCS office or visit www.sc.nrcs.usda.gov. |
